(One of the projects now is the U-turn cafe. This will be a
meeting place to get food, have fun, or meet/be a mentor to other kids. Once finished, this will be the new thing in
West York, we are convinced!)
Watch out for the flying tile and the electrical cords! Things are moving
along in the U-turn café! What? You dont quite know what were talking about? Not a problem. As you read through the interviews
with the guys who are helping, youll understand the size of the project and also how much has been accomplished through faithful
helpers and generous donations. Meet some of the guys who are putting this café together- Sam Firestone, Ron Snelbaker, George
Illgenfritz, Elijah Crisamore, Josh Crisamore, Jeff Snelbaker, Barry Shaffer, Gary Baker, and Scott Child. Whether they help
out every Saturday or every once in while, each is just as important to perform such a big task. The U-turn Café Construction
started in January a year ago and continued until that may when the church roof project began. Since, the U-turn construction
has started back to every Saturday, beginning at approximately 6:00am. For any additional information, see Sam, Ron, George,
or any of the other men who have put in so much work.
Do you have a specific job you are doing at the moment?
All- Work with whatever
needs done.
Elijah- Specifically
working on the tile floor by trying to remove broken or damaged pieces which will be replaced with new tile. (By Elijahs expressions
and the comments of the other men, this task is turning out to be frustrating)
Jeff- Works on electrical
aspects of the café.
Overall (Sam)- Working
on electrical conduit through the whole café (storeroom, bathroom, café, walls, ceiling, etc.) The studding is mostly done,
but looking to wiring the café for Internet capabilities.
What are some examples of some jobs anyone can help with?
Scott- Constant clean
up is always needed. Also, people can just observe and learn. Be available for any small tasks that may pop up.
Jeff- we will need
people to help hold dry wall up and any other "strength" is welcomed.
What was one of the most exciting things so far that surprised you when it
happened?
Scott- it was great
when the ductwork finally came down.
Gary- it was exciting
to see the hole in the wall, which started the entrance to the café.
Sam- when the bathroom
came together, the plumbing needed moved around to make the bathroom handicap accessible. Also, the café needed better electrical
capabilities. We were surprised and thankful when equipment and manpower were donated to put a new electrical service for
the equipment that will be in the café.
Scott- All the guys
work together so everyone gets to know each other more. (I observed that they all looked like they had a lot of fun)
